Yep, as Terry mentioned, SoftKiss will drive packet modems. And my
program (Savant) will speak with SoftKiss (or any TNC in KISS mode)
and provide a nice Macintosh interface for packet radio. You can get
SoftKiss as well as a demo copy of Savant via anonymous ftp from:
cpre1.ee.iastate.edu:/pub/ke0ph/

Kenwood's use a different PTT method than others. As I recall you
have to connect between the sheilds of the input audio and earphone
jacks. You can try it with a screwdriver to be sure. Then it just
takes a slight modification of the modem to tie those two points
together through the output transistor, rather than the 3.3K ohm
resistor.

Subject: DRSI DPK9600...
To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu
Hi, i ve been using the DRSI DPK9600 tnc here to set up a radio for 9600
baud. It works with my upstairs station (IC471a/G3RUH modem/MFJ1270B) just
fine , thru the new radio. It uses a z80, and some custom chips, and the
MXCOM MX489 single chip .5GFSK modem. That s techno speak for K9NG modulation
or what the 2 way radio advertiseing people now call DGFSK or is it DGMSK?
So, altogether, this TNC only has 10 chips! Pretty slick. Radio baud rate
it simple, u select 4800/9600/19k2 with jumpers in side the TNC. It has audio
input, and output level controls. The input level control was useful this time
around. That is, these controls are internal multi turn pots.
Im not sure if its a 10 Mhz Z80 or not. Usually for 19k2, 10 Mhz Z80 would
be a minimun for proper operation. It is also using the same Z80 SIO as the
TNC 2, so maybe, and this is a BIG MAYBE, its TNC 2 code compatible. And NO
it does not send the tx audio continuously, during rx. It turns this audio
off and on successfully.
Pretty nice unit, on the whole. Probably what one version of the original
TNC 2 should have been.

Subject: Integrate HF w/WAN
To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu
Hi:
I can imagine this would be excruciatingly slow but - does anyone
have any amateur or business experience with using HF for WAN
connectivity? I'd like to put an HF transceiver at our hub location
and provide mobile users the opportunity to at least upload and download
files if not interactively log into their home accounts. Any comments
would be appreciated.

was not able to write it down would like to contact the person who did the
posting. Did anyone keep the number?

someone to write the step-by-step procedures needed to blackstart such a
beastie w/o having the time to go back to school to become a unix gooroo.
spec ALL the parts used and where to get them. "make install"? i didn't get a
"make" with my copy of DOS (or a C compiler for that matter..). include
workarounds for things that may not go right. be available to help guide
folks into and out of things that may be bad/good with the program.
73 would probably buy it. last time i did something for them it was like
$50/page. could be the seminal work for this idea...especially if you can
show how to do things like dual boot to other systems including ol' DOS and
OS/2. maybe it'll even be a monthly column...
probable target system:
386sx16 with 4 Mb ram and a 40 Mb disk. VGA display. a couple of
com ports (1 with mickeysoft mouse), etc.

I've been convinced for a long time, but a friend tells me that
without a CD-ROM, the diskspace Linux takes is prohibitive. He
says 100 megs. On my 200 meg drive, that's a lot.

Unfortunately, it is loaded down with both halves of a mobile home (stacked),
a 40 foot sailing yacht, 4 cars, a truck, household goods too numerous to
mention, a couple of jet-skis and a travel trailer.
Of course, this could just be a religious war....
